“It is high time to clear wrong perceptions against Islam and Muslims”, said Al-Sheikh Al-Sayyed Affeefuddin Al-Gailani Baghdadi, renowned Islamic scholar of Malaysia, during his visit to the International Islamic University Islamabad  (IIUI) on Tuesday.

He said that IIUI was playing a great role in portraying true picture of Islam. He said that Pakistan is a precious gift of Allah for Muslim Ummah and he is very happy to visit Pakistan. He said it is our prime responsibilities to convey the message of Islam to human being and irradiate misunderstandings created about Islam by anti Islamic elements. He added that IIUI can play tremendous role in this regard.

Prof. Dr. Sajid ur Rehman acting president of IIUI lauded the religious services rendered by Al-Sheikh Al-Sayyed Affeefuddin and his forefather and said that Pakistanis are very fond of Sufia because Sufia has played vital role in spreading of Islam in these areas. He said Pakistan came into being on the basis of Islamic ideology and IIUI is promoting the same cause. He further added that Pakistani nation has great love for Muslim all over the world and every Pakistani feels the pain and sorrow of Muslims whenever they are in trouble.

Prof. Dr. Tahir Mansoor, Director General Faculty of Shariah briefed the distinguish guest about the university and its various departments. At the end Dr. Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman presented the IIUI crests to the Al-Sheikh Al-Sayyed Affeefuddin and other members of delegation.

It is remarkable to note that Al-Sheikh Al-Sayyed Affeefuddin Al-Gailani hails from the family of famous Islamic saint Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gilani. Al-Sheikh Al-Sayyed Affeefuddin shifted to Malaysia from Iraq in  2008. Sheikh Gillani is viewed as a moderate scholar who is held in high esteem. He is a patron of Al-Wariseen Trust which raises and distributes funds to the programme relating to teachings and understanding of Islam, education and health sciences.

During our April 2012 gathering for the Fath Ar-Rabbani class, we were visited by a special guest from USA, Shaykh Abdulkarim Yahya. He spoke about his journey as a new Muslim seeking sacred knowledge and the universal essence of fitrah.

How excellent is worthy money for a worthy man.

Or why he said:

There is no good in this world except for one who says: “Like this, and like this…,” indicating that he was distributing it with his hands to pious and righteous causes.

Let this world stay in your hands for the welfare of the dependents of the Lord of Truth (Almighty and Glorious is He), but expel it from your hearts, for it will surely do you harm. Do not allow its bounty and charm to delude you, for you must soon depart and it will depart after you.
O young man! Do not ignore me and follow your own subjective thinking, because you will go astray. Anyone who tries to get by with his subjective ideas alone will go astray and fall and slip. When you rely entirely on your own thinking, you are deprived of guidance and protection, because you do not look for them and do net see the reason for them. You say: “I can manage without the knowledge of the scholars.” You lay claim to knowledge, so where is the practice. What is the effect of this claim? What is its corroboration? The validity of your claim to knowledge will be deomnstrated only by practical action, sincerity and patience in the face of adversity, and by your not being changeable, not getting worried and not complaining to other creatures.
You are blind, so how can you claim to be perceptive? Your intelligence is defective, so how can you claim to understand? Give up your false pretension and repent to Allah (Almighty and Glorious is He). He is the One you need, to the exclusion of any other. You must turn away from everything and seek the Creator of everything. Do not concern yourself with those who can be broken and restored, destroyed and controlled. Attend to the private business of your own self until it is tamed and really knows its Lord (Almighty and Glorious is He), then you may pay attention to others. Take the highway of His purpose. Seek His company in this world and the hereafter. Make a practice of pious devotion, of detachment and isolation from all apart from Him. You must always practice self-effacement. Do not let yourself be certain of anything except the divine commandments and prohibitions, for He has made you certain of them.
O men and O women! Saved would be any among you who had with him [or her] one atom of sincerity, one atom of devotion, one atom of patience, and gratitude. I see that you are bankrupt.

All this done in the way of Allah Almighty and Glorious is He. How will Allah deal with such people as these. To learn a bit of how they will be dealt with you must regularly read Surat Al Insaan. And in so doing you may be inspired to behave in a similar manner as Allah wills.

Later, in his sleep in a dream, he heard a voice saying

You want to show Me your generosity on the day of My Generosity? I asked them to come to forgive them!

Allah, Almighty and Glorious is He, has mandated Ramadhan so He can forgive us for all of our sins. This is Generosity. In the dream he said

I have forgiven them while they are still in their mother’s wombs.

He knows us very well, Almighty and Glorious is He. “If this one is going to go to Hajj, I am going to forgive him. From the beginning.”

He, Almighty and Glorious is He, is Kind, and He gives before you ask.

In Arab history there are famous names about generous people and they write poems about them. One of this is Hatim at Tai. His name was Hatim or Hatem and at Ta’i his tribe. He lived before the time of Rasulullah, peace and blessings be upon him,. Hatem at Ta’i was a Christian. For Arabs the most important thing is his sword and his horse. If you have these two things ni means you are a knight (faaris). And they say that the one who has no horse has no money. IN modern times it is the car. If have a good car, you are wealthy, if no good car, not. But in the time of Hatim, if you want to be a knight you must have a horse and a sword and you must know how to use them. Some will say “You don’t know how to use the sword.” In those days they also covered the sword with gold. There is a saying. If you cover your sword with old and you don’t know how to use it they will say “I prefer to break this sword and use the gold to make jewellery that you can wear instead of wasting it on the sword just for show. But, someone with a sword and horse is a knight. If anything happens he will be the first to defend his people. He won’t wait for anything, reinforcements, or anything. He will act.

So, once, in a time of difficulty and extreme hunger, Hatim slaughtered his horse so the people would have something to eat. And his horse was one of the best.

From that day forward he was used as an example of generosity and an Arab expression for this is “more generous than Hatem”.

At the time of Islam, Hatem had passed away but left two children, Adi ibn Hatim and Sufana binte Hatim at Ta’i – the second a woman.

Their tribe was opposed to the teachings of Rasulullah may Allah bless him and grant him peace so the muslims fought them and they (the tribe at Ta’i) lost. And they were held captive including the full tribe of Bani at Tai. The laws of the day held that to gain their freedom someone must pay a ransom for the captives. But the entire tribe was held captive and they were not wealthy so who to pay? It happened that Rasulullah Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, was walking nearby the area where they were held captive and when the daughter of Hatim say him she recited a poem to the effect of “Is this the position of the generous who feed the poor to be in our current state?”. So Sayiddinah Rasulullah upon hearing this stopped and said: “Bring this lady to me.” They brought her and he asked: “Who are you?” She replied: ” I am Sufana bintu Hatim at Ta’i.” He asked: “The most generous of all Arabs?”. She replied “Yes.” Rasulullah then said: “The whole tribe, including this one is free – in the way of Allah, Almighty and Glorious is He, because of the generosity of your father.”. And straight away a poem was written to the effect of “Hatim at Ta’i was generous to feed the poort but Rasulullah freed the lives of his people.”.
